Edge Of My Seat
And I'm sitting on the edge of my seat...
Due to Rabenstrange posting his cliffhanger, I've decided to post my account of our near death experience. Well... I was going to post about it but then I got busy.
It took place on our way to Mt Si as we were taking the 18. The 18 (at least at that particular point) was composed of four lanes, two going one way and two going the other with no physical divider going in between.
Now I was driving and we were in the left lane passing this semi. We got up next to it when it started to merge unexpectedly right where we were. Now we are in a Century Buick and this large vehicle of mass destruction has decided that it wants to be in the lane that we are in so due to the laws of gross tonnage we had to abide by the semi's wishes. BUT there was no real place for us to go. I couldn't slow down as there were cars behind me and I was at the time already half way into the lane of the traffic going the opposite direction of us so we didn't have time for that anyways. So I took the only option available to us: I floored it.
We did quickly pass the semi and were able to make it back into the proper lane but it was close as the other cars coming from the other direction. There wasn't much room for failure...
We were probably going around 45 (I believe. I can't remember the exact speed limit of that particular point) initially and the other traffic was going the same. A head on collision of 90mph (45 one way and 45 the other) would have probably resulted in the end of TBQelite as we knew. him. It would actually have been much higher then 90 as I had to speed up to pass the semi.
Apparently there was an accident that took the entirety of the right lane which was why the semi was forced to merge where I was. For him that was the lesser of the damage he'd have caused if it resulted in an accident. Running into the accident and two police cars or pushing a small Buick off the side of the road and maybe getting a head on collision.
*sigh*
Driving has a lot of responsiblity and hard decisions that one must make. We made it without any real mishap but driving isn't all fun and games that some believe it to be.
The reason that our trip to Mt Si didn't turn into such a disaster was solely the result of the Lord's mercy. It could have resulted in such a tradegy but He didn't allow it. For sure I wouldn't have made it if it did came to a head on collision and the odds of the others surviving would have been really bad to put it mildly.

Wow! I'm glad you guys are okay!
Where's the speed limit only 45 on highway 18? My average speed on 18 is usually at least 80 mph. And I'm not going much faster, if any faster, than the vehicles around me.
They were on the eastside. Around there, 18 isn't split like a normal high/freeway. It's more like 169. Hence the lower speed limit.
You do not want to go 80 on 18 east... not at all...
What a scary prospect..
Oh, ok. I guess I usually go slower over there, in the rare times I'm on that stretch. I was thinking more between 169 and 167 where 100mph doesn't seem unreasonable.
Nat insists that where we were it was 60 mph.
Since he's probably the least inclined to exageration and none of the rest of us knew for sure I'll assume that he knew what he was talking about.
Nat insists a lot of things and he doesn't need a reason.
But I'm not going to argue. It could have been 60 at that particular point.
Rabenstrange told me about that. Scarry...
Oooh, a project 86 concert? Nice!
