Anime Review: Air

Category: Anime
Warning: Rated "R" For Anime.

This series was most definitely shoujo. Shoujo is a term which I'll explain further in detail at a later time. For this post however all you need to know is that is a series generally targetted towards a female audience that is centered more on emotions and the like. I personally don't watch them a ton but it is refreshing to watch every once in a while.

As with most shoujo this one had excellent artwork and was riddled with emotions. I'm not going to go into detail about the plotline as I myself am somewhat confused but to quickly sum it up, it's about a girl who is suffering this horrible illness which cannot be cured and which worsens as she becomes close to people. In the end she eventually dies because of it.

This series was not what I expected. I tend to browse series' summaries and grab the ones that sound good to watch at a later time. Most of the time I forget what the series was about when I actually go to watch it and this was one of those encounters.

This series is actually divided into three different arcs even though it was only 22ish episodes long. This is pretty uncommon and very unexpected.

The first arc was focused on the male character, a roaming performer, who is trying to find "the sad girl in the sky" (which turns out that the ill girl is a reincarnation of) and he ends up helping several people around town with their problems and befriends the ill girl. Of course, this friendship merely makes her condition worse and he has to deal with that.

The next arc was a really cool one which went back into medevial Japan and was the story of "the sad girl in the sky". The original one. That arc actually could have been made into its own series. I liked it but maybe that's because it contained a lot more action then the other arcs.

And the last arc was the ending of the girl's life from the point of view of a crow (which still doesn't quite make sense to me...). The struggles of the foster mom trying to take care of the girl, trying to keep her well against this unknown illness. The girl lost her memory of everything and became like a little child and the foster mother had to rebuild their entire relationship.

Then it goes to her regaining her memory and she puts on a valiant effort to recover. In the end she dies. Which was very sad and touching.

This series almost brought tears to my eyes throughout the entirety of it.

+++ Pluses +++

*Strong emotions
*Excellent artwork
*Several other excellent "side-stories"
*Unique storyline

--- Minuses ---

*They got rid of one of my favorite characters! *sob*
*Series should have been longer

I would only recommend this to those who've watched several other series and who are interested in emotional shoujo-type anime. I'm going to give this series a 3.5 out of 5 as well.

Hmm. I don't think I'm qualified to watch this show. Although I do like stories where the good guys lose, this story sounds interesting.

I'm happy you got so much joy out of it.

Hahahaha...

No. Definitely not. And just to make things clear... I DO NOT watch Pokemon. :)

Pokemon is a child's series. That is... it's intended for children. Also... what you see on TV is horrible as WB (or whoever... I know it's on the WB station) has degraded it even beyond it's childish Japanese version.

So... Pokemon is not worth watching.
